Hello, and welcome to the Heart Space Hogsback blog :-)

We appreciate you stopping by and hope you enjoy your time spent with us.

I am Shireen, mother to three beautiful and lively children named Amber, Noah and Tatum and partner to a Sarel, fellow heartist and best friend.

We live in the small forested village of Hogsback, high up in the Amathole mountains in the Eastern Cape. We have chosen to live in harmony with the earth while sharing our space with those who feel called to join us.


Reduce, Re-use, Recycle


One of the most important aspect of living in harmony with the earth is consciously dealing with our waste.

We believe in reducing the amount of packaging and plastic bags we get from the shops. Instead of new plastic bags, we re-use old ones and in most cases ask for our groceries to be packed into an old box. These boxes then become good fire starting aids as well storage solutions and great play things for the kids :-)We then sort all our recycling in our recycle centre. Containers are re-used and other items are used  creatively to make fun and useful items.What we do not use we take to the city recycling depots.

Supporting Local Artists


The Heart Space shop showcases the work of local artists with commission of sales supporting the growth of Heart Space. We are proud to work with such amazing people whose talents bring colour and joy into the space.

Sharing Studio Space

The Heart Space Studio is available for workshops, courses and creative sessions with community members and visitors.

Upcoming initiatives include the Hearts and Hands Needle Craft Empowerment Program as well as recycling art projects aimed at educating and stimulating the youth in the community to be creative with household waste.







The Zen Zone: Homesteading Kitchen and Gathering Space


The Zen Zone will offer off-the-grid meals and beverages from the homesteading kitchen, with produce coming from our gardens and tunnels. Come Summer we will be very busy making jams and preserves with the all the fruit from the orchards.

Our goal is to have this space completely off-the-grid: wood burning stoves, rainwater from the dam and solar power for electrical appliances. 

The gathering space will offer cozy, comfortable accommodation for meetings, conscious cinema screenings and simply enjoying a good book or board game with friends.

I can just see it now - can you? :-)







The Little Silver Shed

Located amidst the swaying trees in the Heart Space Garden, the little silver shed will serve as a venue for various wellness programs, retreats and workshops.

Some upcoming events include -
Reiki retreats,
Colour Therapy retreats,
Biodanza workshops,
Trauma Release Exercise programs and
Meditation sessions.

We are excited to be working with some amazing people and organizations so watch this space for further details of upcoming events.

Connecting with Mother Earth


Take a walk through the garden, into the forest and enjoy the variety of wildlife that call this space home. Louries, Samango monkeys and local baboons are all common visitors. There is also a short waterfall walk that you can enjoy with the whole family.
